The Music Program provides instrumental lessons and ensemble opportunities for students interested in developing their musical talents. Music education in primary schools enhances cognitive development, emotional growth, and social skills, making it extremely beneficial for holistic child development. We are proud of our large and inclusive program at HHPS, and hope your child will benefit from it during their time at our school.

Instruments Lessons Available
Professional instrumental lessons are tailored to each student’s skill level and interests. Thirty minute lessons* before school from 7:20-8:50, and after school from 3:05-5:05. Lessons are accessible from HHOOSH for those enrolled in before or after school care. *Forty five minute lessons available for more experienced players only by arrangement. We have access to tutors for violin, viola, cello, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, cornet, French horn, baritone horn, guitar, piano/ keyboard, drums and percussion instruments – giving students a wide range of musical options to explore. All lessons are fee-based.
Instrument Hire
HHPS P&C own a number of the above instruments which we rent out at a subsidised rate to make learning an instrument more available to the school community.
Music Ensembles
HHPS generally runs six ensembles, each conducted by highly skilled conductors. We have three vocal (Kindy Choir, Junior and Senior vocal ensembles), two strings (Stringletts and our more advanced Chamber Strings) and one Jazz Band. Vocal ensembles are open to all students irrespective of musical experience. The instrumental ensembles can be joined after mastering the basics with private tuition, and provide a pathway for those learning instruments to further their learning through group participation. All ensembles are fee based after an initial trial. We encourage annual commitment to ensure students benefit from the cumulative learning of both general skills and specific music, and also to help foster a sense of continuity and community.
Performance Opportunities
All ensembles have regular performance opportunities both within and external to school. These help students develop confidence and skills in music, memory, resilience, collaboration and expression. Our Senior Vocal and Chamber Strings have a history of performing annually at the Sydney Opera House as part of the Department of Education Arts Unit Festival of Music concert series. Jazz Band have the opportunity to visit a recording studio.
